Sponsorships and Community Giving

Washington Trust sponsors community events and activities such as road races, concerts, and festivals. Consideration is given based upon:

• The extent to which the event directly benefits the communities and constituencies we serve.
• Whether or not a bank employee is a member, volunteer or otherwise involved with the organization/event.
• How critical the specific cause or program is to current events.
• The scope of marketing, advertising, or publicity Washington Trust will receive in return for its sponsorship commitment.
• Whether Washington Trust is the exclusive sponsor representing the banking/financial services industry.

Sponsorship requests must be submitted in writing at least 90 days before the event. Requests are reviewed weekly.

How to Submit a Charitable or Sponsorship Request:

Please fill out the Washington Trust Sponsorship Information Form and send it with a written request on your organization's letterhead and include:

• The type of assistance requested (charitable donation, sponsorship, volunteer assistance, etc.)
• A brief paragraph outlining the key points of the proposal and the amount of the request.
• The contact person's name, address, and telephone number.
• Indicate 501-(C) (3) designation.
• A brief description of the organization, its mission, years of service, and its role in the community.
• If a Washington Trust employee or customer is involved with the organization, it should be noted on the proposal.
• If the request is for a capital project, include an itemized income and expense budget for project.
• Criteria by which the applicant will evaluate the success of the proposed project.

Restrictions:

All requests must be in writing according to the guidelines above. Washington Trust does not generally make contributions to or for the following:

• Organizations outside of our defined market area
• Individuals
• Religious organizations
• Political campaigns or candidates
• Labor, fraternal and veterans organizations
• Travel expenses, registration fees or conferences
• Pass through donations
• National health research/ service organizations
• Advertising, fundraising, or incentive programs

Scholarships

Each year, The Washington Trust Company provides two $5,000 scholarships to help two area students finance their college educations at Bryant University and the University of Rhode Island. Scholarships are awarded to area students who have been admitted and have committed to Bryant University and The University of Rhode Island.

Application Process: All scholarship requests must be submitted, in writing, to the Enrollment Services Office.

Donation of Computers, Furniture, or Office Equipment

From time to time, Washington Trust replaces its computers, office furniture and other office equipment. Once the new equipment is installed, we are able to donate the previous generation of equipment to local nonprofit organizations that have expressed a need. All of the computers and other equipment we donate are in good working condition.

Affordable Housing Programs

Washington Trust is committed to helping low-and moderate-income borrowers purchase their own homes. We work closely with the borrowers and with organizations such as the Federal Housing Authority, Rhode Island Housing and Mortgage Finance Corporation (RIHMFC) and Habitat for Humanity. With RIHMFC, we co-sponsor First-Time Homebuyer seminars to help borrowers understand the many aspects of the home buying process, including credit criteria, budgeting, and the responsibilities of homeownership. For graduates of the homeownership program, Washington Trust offers borrowers a $100 credit toward application fees.

America's Promise

Washington Trust is proud to participate in America's Promise; the national not-for-profit organization that is dedicated to improving the lives of our nation's youth. As a Bank of Promise, we provide financial and volunteer support to children and youth-related activities, including:

Mentorship programs
Financial education programs
Youth team sponsorships
Character building and leadership programs
Community service programs

Financial Literacy

Through the American Bankers Association's "Teach Children to Save" and "Get Smart About Credit" programs, Washington Trust bankers visit schools throughout Rhode Island and Connecticut to teach students about the importance and value of saving money and establishing credit.

Peanut Butter Xpress

Each spring, beginning in 2001, Washington Trust hosts a month-long drive to collect jars of peanut butter for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

In 2001, 2 tons of peanut butter was collected, and each year the donations have increased. In 2008, a record of 13 tons of peanut butter was collected. Washington Trust has collected over 57 tons of peanut butter for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank.

United Way

Washington Trust has been recognized by the United Way as a Platinum Company for the contributions made by the Bank and its employees. Historically, 2 of every 3 Washington Trust employees contribute to the United Way campaign each year. Through our support, we assist dozens of United Way agencies in our area. Our employees also volunteer their time to participate in the United Way Corporate Campaign and Dare to Care days.
